Can You Remove a Google Review? What Businesses Can Actually Do
Quick Answer
Businesses cannot delete Google reviews themselves. Google is the only party that can remove a review, and it will only do so when the review demonstrably violates one of its published content policies — spam, conflict of interest, off-topic content, prohibited language, personal information, or civil discourse violations. A well-prepared removal request with clear evidence has a materially better chance than a bare flag from the profile.
Who can remove a Google review
Only Google. Not the business owner, not the reviewer's employer, and — outside of narrow circumstances — not even the reviewer without deleting their own account activity. The business's role is to document a policy violation and route the report through the correct channel.
What Google looks for
Google's prohibited and restricted content policy covers, among other things:
- Fake engagement — reviews from people who never interacted with the business
- Conflict of interest — reviews from current or former employees, competitors, or the owner
- Off-topic — political rants, personal grievances unrelated to the customer experience
- Restricted content — profanity, harassment, sexually explicit language, personal information
- Impersonation — accounts pretending to be someone else
Reviews that are simply negative but truthful — even harsh ones — are almost never removed. That is by design.
How the process actually runs
- Identify the policy violation. Vague complaints get denied. Reports that cite a specific policy clause and attach evidence get read.
- Flag through the business profile and, when justified, escalate through the Google Business Profile support channel.
- Preserve evidence — screenshots, transaction records, employment records, IP correlation where legally obtainable.
- Appeal denials. First-round denials are common. A structured appeal with new evidence is often what actually moves a case.
