Removing bad Google reviews, step by step

A step-by-step DIY guide to removing bad Google reviews — plus honest guidance on when the free path is enough and when a professional Google review removal service saves you weeks of iteration.

Before you report: what qualifies

Google removes reviews that violate the Contributed Content Policy. The categories most useful to businesses are fake engagement, off-topic content, restricted content, conflicts of interest, harassment, impersonation, and personal information. If your review does not fit any of those categories, reporting it will not lead to removal. See what counts as a Google review policy violation for the full breakdown with examples.

Step-by-step reporting workflow

  1. 1
Sign in to your Google Business Profile

Go to business.google.com and sign in with the account that manages the profile. If someone else manages it, ask them for owner or manager access first.

  2. 2
    Open the review

In the Reviews section, find the review. On desktop and mobile, click the three-dot menu next to the review text.

  3. 3
    Select 'Report review'

Choose the policy category that best fits. Pick precisely — Google's moderators check the category against the review's content.

  4. 4
    Submit — and take note

The report goes into Google's moderation queue. Note the date and, if Google gives you a case reference, save it.

  5. 5
    Wait a few business days

Clear cases can resolve in 3–5 business days. Complex cases take longer. Google does not send individual outcome emails — you'll see the review disappear if approved, or remain if denied.

  6. 6
    Escalate if denied

Use the Business Profile Help form to escalate. Reference the review URL, the policy category, and the evidence that supports your claim.

Evidence to attach

Google's in-profile flag does not accept file uploads, but its escalation form does. Prepare this evidence before you escalate so the moderator can approve on first read:

  • CRM or POS export showing the reviewer's name/email/phone is not in your records.
  • Screenshots of the reviewer's public account — other reviews, associated business pages, timeline patterns.
  • Timestamps of related events (a social-media incident, a canceled contract) that explain the review's timing.
  • A short cover note citing the exact policy clause you believe the review violates.

What happens after you report

Google's moderators read the report against the cited policy. If the review fits the category, it comes down. If it does not, the review stays and you can appeal. Google does not send you an individual approve/deny email in most cases; check the review periodically or watch REPUSCAN's monitoring alerts if you use our service.

How to appeal a denial

Denials are common on the first pass. To appeal, use the Business Profile Help escalation form, cite the review URL, and attach the evidence you prepared. If the original moderator chose the wrong policy category, cite the correct one this time. See how to appeal a denied Google review removal request for the escalation channels that actually re-open cases.

When to hire a professional Google review removal service

DIY works best for single, clear-cut violations when you have time to iterate. Hire a professional when: (a) you have a coordinated attack of multiple reviews; (b) the first-pass flag has been denied; (c) you need this handled while you run the business; or (d) the review contains defamation you don't want to interact with directly. Our Google review removal service handles the full cycle including appeals, and does not charge unless the review is removed.

Removing bad Google reviews: FAQs

How to remove bad reviews from Google My Business?
Google My Business is now Google Business Profile. Sign in, open your reviews, click the three-dot menu on the review, and select 'Report review.' Choose the applicable policy category, submit, and — if denied — escalate through the Business Profile Help form with additional evidence.
How to dispute a Google review?
Google does not have a formal dispute portal — the removal request IS the dispute. If the first-pass flag is denied, escalate via the Business Profile Help form. Provide the review URL, the policy category you believe applies, and the evidence that supports the violation.
Can businesses remove Google reviews on their own?
Businesses can report reviews for policy violations but cannot delete customer reviews directly. Google's moderators decide. The DIY path works best when the violation is clear-cut and the evidence is easy to attach.
How long does the Google review removal process take?
A clean policy-violation flag can resolve in a few business days. Contested cases and escalations to Small Business Support can take several weeks. Google controls the timeline; no service can promise a specific date.
What happens after reporting a Google review?
Google's moderation queue reviews the flag against the cited policy. If approved, the review is removed and the business is not notified individually — you'll see the review disappear. If denied, the review stays and you can appeal with additional evidence.
