What Counts as a Google Review Policy Violation?

A Google review qualifies for removal only when it violates one of Google's published content policies. The most common actionable categories are conflict of interest, fake engagement, off-topic content, restricted content, and personal information. Reviews that are simply negative, unflattering, or unfair — but truthful and on-topic — do not qualify.

The categories that actually get reviews removed

Conflict of interest

Reviews from current or former employees, competitors, business owners rating themselves, or people with a personal dispute unrelated to the customer experience.

Fake engagement

Reviews from people who were never customers, purchased reviews, bot activity, and coordinated review campaigns.

Off-topic

Political statements, complaints about a different business, comments about unrelated news events, or reviews that describe no interaction with the business.

Restricted content

Profanity, harassment, sexually explicit language, hate speech, threats, or content targeting a protected class.

Personal information

Reviews that publish someone's home address, phone number, medical information, or other identifying details.

Impersonation

Accounts posing as someone else to leave a review.

Categories that do NOT qualify

• "The review is unfair." Unfair is not a policy violation.
• "The review is old." Age alone does not trigger removal.
• "We fixed the problem." Post-resolution is not grounds for removal.
• "The reviewer is angry." Emotion is allowed.
• "They only gave one star." Star ratings are not policy-violating.

How to tell before you file

Ask three questions:

1. Can I name a specific policy clause? If not, the report will be denied.
2. Can I prove it with a document? Screenshots, records, correspondence.
3. Would a neutral outsider agree the review breaks that specific rule? If it takes paragraphs to explain, it probably does not.

Grey-area reviews

Some reviews mix legitimate complaints with policy violations — a real customer who then adds a slur, or an accurate service description with fabricated details tacked on. Google generally will not partially remove a review. The strongest cases lead with the clearly-violating element.
