How Do You Get a Yelp Review Removed?

Yelp has two separate systems: removal for guideline violations, and recommendation software that hides reviews without deleting them.

Yelp has two systems, not one

Most business owners confuse them, and the confusion costs them the filing.

Removal happens when a review breaks Yelp's Content Guidelines. Yelp's moderators read the report and decide.

Recommendation is separate. Yelp software decides which reviews are shown by default and which sit behind the "not currently recommended" link at the bottom of the page. A filtered review still exists, still has a star rating, and does not count toward the visible rating. Nobody at Yelp can be asked to filter a review by hand, and Yelp says so publicly.

Understanding which outcome is realistic for a given review determines whether the filing is worth making.

What Yelp's guidelines cover

Yelp removes content for reasons including:

  • No firsthand experience. The reviewer never used the business, or is describing something they heard.
  • Conflicts of interest. Competitors, former employees, and reviews traded for a discount or a free item.
  • Threats, harassment, lewd content, or hate speech.
  • Private information, such as an employee's full name plus a location, a phone number, or a medical detail.
  • Content about a different business or a different location.
  • Reviews driven by a media report or a viral post rather than a customer visit, which Yelp handles with a consumer alert.

Yelp does not remove a review for being negative, for being unfair, or for costing the business money.

How to file

  1. Report the review from the business account, choosing the specific guideline it breaks.
  2. Keep the report to facts. Dates, records, and the exact wording that violates the guideline.
  3. If the first answer is no and the review clearly breaks a guideline, escalate. A declined report is not the end of the process when new evidence or a clearer policy argument exists.
  4. Never offer the reviewer anything to change or delete a review. Yelp treats that as review manipulation and it can trigger a consumer alert on your page.

Yelp usually answers a report within a few days. Escalations take longer.

Why it costs more than Google

We charge $697 per Yelp review, against $397 for Google. Yelp's moderation is stricter about what qualifies, its appeals take more evidence, and its filter cannot be influenced by a request. The filing takes more work and more follow up, so the price reflects that.

The terms are the same as Google. The item fee is paid upfront and refunded automatically if the review is not removed within 30 days. No guaranteed outcome, because Yelp owns the decision.

What about the filtered reviews already on your page

If your page has reviews sitting under "not currently recommended," that is Yelp's software, not a penalty someone applied. We include an audit of that list so you know which reviews are actually affecting your visible rating and which are already hidden. It changes what is worth filing on.
